At the time of writing, out-of-control wildfires are ripping across parts of Los Angeles, leading to at least 24 deaths, burning down hundreds of buildings, and the evacuation of more than 179,000 people in the county.

If there is any good to come out of events like these, it’s remembering there are always people who are ready, willing, and able to help their communities.

Independent pharmacies have always gone above and beyond the call of duty to care for their communities. Since 1962, Mickey Fine Pharmacy & Grill has been a healthcare pillar of the Beverly Hills community and has been a source of hope and comfort during the ongoing fires, as seen in his appearance on Fox News.

We sat down with pharmacy owner Jeffrey Gross about Mikey Fine’s history and how it’s helping his LA community as the city continues to battle historic wildfires.

A Legacy of Community Care

For over half a century, Mickey Fine Pharmacy has built a legacy of care and connection. With three generations of patients and staff, the pharmacy exemplifies the deep bonds that independent pharmacies can create.

“We were among the top 10 vaccinating pharmacies for COVID for seniors in LA County,” Jeff shares. “We also gave the monkeypox vaccine for free during that time.”

Even beyond its public health achievements, Mickey Fine holds a unique place in the heart of Los Angeles.

Jeff proudly notes, “Mickey Fine Pharmacy is the only original pharmacy and soda fountain in LA County.”

This dual role as a healthcare provider and a community landmark has only strengthened the pharmacy’s ability to step up in times of crisis.

Supporting LA Through Wildfires

During the ongoing wildfires, Mickey Fine Pharmacy has been a steadfast resource for its community, ensuring residents have access to critical medications, supplies, and guidance.

“So you take super high winds, fire, and nothing to put it out, and that's a pretty bad recipe for disaster,” Jeff explains. “With all the pressures that we're going through, if we're not there, what’s going to happen? What would have happened if independent pharmacies weren’t there during this time of crisis?”

In addition to providing medications and healthcare advice, the pharmacy has been a source of reassurance for residents overwhelmed by the chaos. Jeff encourages his community to remember the “Four P’s” in times of disaster: people, pets, paperwork, and prescriptions.

“Take care of yourselves and your loved ones first,” he advises. “Then make sure your pets are safe, secure any essential documents, and ensure you have the prescriptions you need.”

How Independent Pharmacies Can Step Up

Mickey Fine Pharmacy is just one example of how independent pharmacies can serve as pillars of support during natural disasters. By leveraging their unique role in the community, pharmacies can step up in both big and small ways, including:

  • Providing Emergency Refills: Ensure patients have access to critical medications even if their regular pharmacy is inaccessible.
  • Offering Supplies: Stock and distribute essential items like face masks, first aid supplies, and over-the-counter medications.
  • Being a Reliable Resource: Offer guidance on disaster preparedness and health tips during crises.
  • Partnering Locally: Collaborate with local organizations to assist with relief efforts.

Independent pharmacies have proven time and time again that they are capable of going above and beyond to care for their communities. As Jeff puts it, “We’ve already proven what we can do. Imagine what we could do if we were given a little bit more leeway.”

Conclusion

As Los Angeles continues to battle these devastating fires, Mickey Fine Pharmacy reminds us of the essential role independent pharmacies play in our communities. Whether it’s during a natural disaster or the everyday challenges of providing healthcare, pharmacies like Mickey Fine show that care and compassion make all the difference.

“With chains closing 2,100 stores across the country, it’s independent pharmacies that fill the gap. We’re here for our communities when they need us most.”
